There are different types of avian influenza virus. Therefore, they may cause different symptoms that require different treatments with antiviral medication.
The current vaccination does not show clear evidence of protection against the virus. Studies done in laboratories suggest that prescribed medicines approved for human influenza viruses should work in treating avian influenza infection in humans.

H5N1 viruses are mutating and evolving constantly. Like all influenza viruses, they can suddenly change by recombination. Independent studies are under way to develop a treatment for the bird flu virus.
