Management and Medications

Management of esophagitis depends on the causes that originate the disease:

- If gastroesophageal reflux disease:

    . H2-blockers and Proton pump inhibitors.

    . Nissen Fundoplication (surgical procedure).

- If Allergy:

      . Oral or inhaled steroids.

      . Proton pump inhibitors.

      . Change of diet, avoiding the allergens.

-          If caused by medications, first measures include the prescription of alternative drugs and/or change on intake habits.

-          Special diet, avoiding spicy foods, acidic and hard foods that can damage the esophagus.

-          Avoiding alcohol and tobacco.

-          Drugs and surgery are some of the options in cases of chemicals intakes.

-          Management should focus on specific treatments and drugs when viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites cause esophagitis.
