Description
It is also known as fibrocystic breast changes or fibrocystic breast disease; despite is not a disease at all.
Fibrocystic breast changes are normal and harmless affecting an estimated 30-60% of women. It is characterized by lumpiness and discomfort related to hormonal effects from the menstrual cycle.
The condition primarily affects women between the ages of 30 and 50 and may occur in one or both breasts.
The causes of fibrocystic breast condition are unknown but it is suspected that reproductive hormones, estrogen in particular, play an important role. The lumps observed are always in the same area and may grow and reduce the size with each menstrual cycle.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis can be confirmed with a physical exam, including palpation of the breast. However, a doctor may order an additional mammogram or breast ultrasound.
