Description
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, also called GERD or GORD in British English, is a chronic digestive disease that occurs when stomach acid or bile flows back (refluxes) into the esophagus. The backwash of acid irritates the lining of the esophagus and causes GERD signs and symptoms.
Over time, chronic inflammation of the esophagus can lead to complications.
Many people have reflux regularly and it's not usually a cause for concern. But with GERD, reflux occurs more often and causes noticeable discomfort.
Diagnosis
Several tests are available to confirm the diagnosis:
- Endoscopy.
- pH probe test, in order to measure the amount of acid.
- Manometry, which is an esophageal motility test measuring movement and valve pressure in the esphagus.
