Treatment is focused on the replacement of thyroid hormones that the gland is
not producing.
Levothyroxine (thyroxine) is the most commonly used medication. Tablets are
often prescribed on daily basis. Increasing the intake of iodine through
iodine-rich foods can relieve iodine deficiency. There is no cure for autoimmune
hypothyroidism.
For most people, treatment is for life. If not treated, hypothyroidism can lead
to severe complications.
