The
measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine can prevent the disease.
The vaccine
occasionally causes side effects.
There
is no specific treatment for measles and the virus has to run its course. The
immune system should fight the infection. Recovery is usually expected within a
couple of weeks.
The
patient must be isolated
to reduce the risk of transmission.
Plenty
of fluids and extra rest are advised during the therapy. Fever can be controlled
with ibuprofen or paracetamol. Vitamin A supplementation should be considered in
order to prevent complications.
Hospital care and special treatment will be needed in severe cases of measles.
