Viral meningitis
Viral meningitis typically requires supportive therapy only; most viruses responsible for causing meningitis are not amenable to specific treatment.
   Bacterial meningitis
Antibiotics are administered for bacterial meningitis. The type will vary depending on the bacteria causing the infection. Other medications will be used to treat symptoms such as brain swelling, shock, and seizures.
   Fungal meningitis
Fungal meningitis, such as cryptococcal meningitis, is treated with long courses of highly dosed antifungals.
