Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries, which are reproductive glands found only in females.

In most cases, the exact cause of ovarian cancer remains unknown.

Abdominal pain is generally located in the pelvis area. Symptoms of ovarian cancer can be mistaken for symptoms of other non-cancerous conditions, which can cause a delay in diagnosis.

There are several types of ovarian tumors:

- Epithelial ovarian tumor, located in the cells that cover the external surface of the ovary. It is the most common type.

- Germ cell tumors, which start from the cells that produce the eggs.

- Stromal tumors, which develop in the tissues that hold the ovaries together.

Most of these tumors are non-cancerous.
After a physical examination, the following tests and procedures might be needed in order to make the diagnosis:

- Blood test.

- Transvaginal ultrasound.

- Biopsy.

- Imaging tests (CT, MRI)

- Laparotomy or laparoscopy (to take samples for the biopsy and determine the spread of the cancer).
