Description |
A parasitic disease is an infectious disease caused or transmitted by a
parasite. Most parasitic infections are asymptomatic and will resolve on their
own, while others can cause disability or death if left untreated.
Parasites range in size from tiny, one-celled organisms called protozoa to worms
that can be seen with the naked eye. Parasites take nutrients from the body and
excrete hazardous wastes, which are destructive to the human body.
Allergies, gastrointestinal diseases, arthritis, asthma, disorders of the
thyroid gland or even nerve disorders can often be directly linked to parasite
infections.
Flukes (Trematodes), or flatworms, are likely the most common form of parasite
found in humans worldwide. These commonly infect intestines, heart, lungs, liver and kidneys. |

Diagnosis |
In some cases, parasitic disease is very difficult to diagnose. Doctors may order tests
based on medical conditions of the patient. Commonly used tests are:
- Stool sample exam.
- Endoscopy.
- Colonoscopy.
- Blood tests.
- Imaging tests (X-ray, MRI, CAT scan) |
