Peptic ulcers, also called PUD, duodenal ulcer, esophageal ulcer, gastric ulcer, and stomach ulcer, are erosions equal or greater than 0.5 cm in the gastric or duodenal mucosa and happen when the acidic digestive juices damage the walls of the stomach or duodenum.
The most common cause is infection with a bacterium called
helicobacter pylori
. Another cause is the long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) such as aspirin.
Diagnosis
The following tests can help to diagnose peptic ulcers:
- Test for helicobacter pylori.
- Endoscopy.
- Barium X-ray.
