Treatment is aimed to control the infection. Gingivitis, the mild form of gum disease, can be managed with:

· Proper daily tooth brushing and flossing

· Regular (minimum twice a year) professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist.

· Medications, including antibiotics.

· Surgical treatment.

If gingivitis is not treated, it can evolve to periodontitis, which  affects the bones, gums, and tissue that support the teeth.
